Getting Your Social Insurance Number (SIN)
How to apply for a SIN in Canada.
Step-by-step guide
Understand what a SIN is
Your 9-digit Social Insurance Number is required to work in Canada and access government benefits. It's linked to your tax account and employment records. Keep it confidential.
Gather required documents
Canadian citizens: Birth certificate + 1 other ID (passport, driver's license). Permanent residents: Confirmation of PR + foreign passport. Temporary residents: Work or study permit.
Apply in person at Service Canada
Find nearest Service Canada office. Bring original documents (no copies). Application is free. Most are processed immediately and you walk out with your SIN on paper.
Keep your SIN secure
Memorize itβdon't carry the paper in your wallet. Only give it to employers, banks, and government. Never share it online or via email. Report lost/stolen SIN immediately.
