Surviving Your First Day at Work
What to expect and how to make a great first impression.
Step-by-step guide
Arrive early and prepared
Show up 10-15 minutes early. Bring required documents (SIN, void cheque, ID). Have a notebook for taking notes. Dress professionally—match or slightly exceed office dress code.
Be friendly and observant
Introduce yourself to everyone you meet. Ask people about their roles. Observe office culture (communication style, lunch habits, work hours). Listen more than you talk.
Take lots of notes
Write down names, passwords, procedures, and expectations. Ask questions when unclear—it's better to ask than make mistakes. Review your notes at the end of the day.
Be patient with yourself
You won't know everything on day one. It's okay to feel overwhelmed. Focus on making connections and understanding the basics. Most places expect a 3-6 month learning curve.
