Tax Deductions for Students

Claim tuition, textbooks, and other student expenses.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Claim tuition with T2202

Download your T2202 from your school's portal. This certificate shows tuition and fees paid. You can claim amounts you didn't receive scholarships for.

  2. Claim student loan interest

If you paid interest on government student loans, claim it using your tax software. You can carry forward unused amounts for up to 5 years.

  3. Claim moving expenses

If you moved 40km+ closer to school or work, claim moving costs (truck rental, gas, temporary lodging). Keep all receipts.

  4. Save unused credits

If you don't owe taxes, you can't get a refund for tuition credits. But you can carry them forward to future years or transfer to parents/spouse.
